Keeping Your Budgie's Home Fresh

Regular cage maintenance is essential for your bird's health and happiness. Here's what works for our flock at Cranberry Labs.

Daily Tasks

Spot cleaning is your friend. Every morning, remove any droppings from perches and toys, replace soiled food and water dishes, and check the cage floor for any mess. Takes about 5 minutes and prevents buildup.

Fresh food and water goes without saying, but it's worth emphasizing — budgies are messy eaters and their water dishes become miniature bird baths. Change them at least once daily, twice if they're particularly enthusiastic.

Weekly Deep Clean

Once a week, we do a full breakdown. Remove all toys, perches, and dishes. Wash everything with hot water and a bird-safe cleaner (we use diluted white vinegar — works great and no harsh chemicals). Let everything air dry completely before reassembling.

The cage bars get a good scrub with a brush to remove any stuck-on debris. Don't forget the corners and ceiling where dust accumulates.

Monthly Projects

Every month, rotate toys and rearrange perches. This keeps the environment interesting for your birds and lets you deep-clean items that have been in use.

Inspect everything for wear — frayed ropes, cracked perches, or loose cage bars all need addressing before they become hazards.

Pro Tips

  • Line the bottom with newspaper for easy cleanup. We tried fancy cage liners — newspaper is cheaper and works just as well.
  • Keep a "cage day" kit with all your cleaning supplies in one place. Makes the process much faster.
  • Clean in the morning when birds are most active and can play outside the cage safely while you work.

Sam and August have been much happier since we established this routine. A clean cage means healthier, more active birds — and less odor for you.
